EXAMPLE - OVERVIEW OF OUR 10 DAY COURSE

This course was designed for local people involved in community organising and campaigns or interested in regeneration issues.

  • Day 1 - a look at the history of and background to regeneration policy and community action in Bradford and nationally.

    Days 2-6 Community Research Skills:
  • Day 2 - identifying the need for a research project, searching out existing information sources, such as libraries, internet and published research.
  • Day 3 - research design, including theories, methodology and questionnaire design.
  • Day 4 - interview skills for research, and practical/ professional issues such as personal safety, ethics and confidentiality.
  • Day 5 - processing and analysing data, including manual and computerised methods.
  • Day 6 - practical and ethical issues in involving community members in carrying out research, different models of community research, focusing on carrying out a community profile.

    Days 7-10 Regeneration & Community Groups skills:
  • Day 7 - organising and running community groups, including constitution, training, publicity, meetings, funding, dealing with media, management committees and legal/financial issues.
  • Day 8 - establishing a community enterprise, including working out what this means, business planning and some analysis of the local labour market.
  • Day 9 - presentation skills, particularly how to present and launch your research. (Participants found this session really boosted their confidence.)
  • Day 10 - developing campaigning skills, putting your case together and who to present it to
