How the Statistics are Calculated

These statements describe legal and other aspects of the data used on the Maps & Stats site. Individual data sets are documented separately - follow the links from any report.

Privacy
The first tme that you Maps & Stats you must download the MapGuide ActiveX Control.

The download is aproximately MB, but will self-expand on your hard disc into about 3MB, which will be automatically stored in a Windows directory for downloaded program files. The file is the Autodesk MapGuide Viewer, which will not affect the running of other programs.

Users in some organisations may need local permission to download plug-ins, or to change their Internet browser security to enable prompted download, running, and script control of "ActiveX" files.

Some aspects of the mapping facilities also require the use of 'cookies'. These are simply non-executable lines of text which cannot carry viruses or report information about your machine or you. Under Microsoft Windows you can find your cookies in the Windows\cookies directory. You may need to change your Internet browser security settings to enable cookies.

Maps & Stats may ask for email addresses for some functions in order to:
  • Gather statistical information regarding the use of the Web Site for internal use only.
  • Enable contact to be made with users regarding new facilities on the site.
  • Maps & Stats will not disclose your email address to any third party without first obtaining your permission.

Data Confidentiality
No personal information about any individual or household can be accessed from the site. Data are only supplied to Maps & Stats as tables of aggregate data. These are not subject to the UK Data Protection Act, because they hold no information identifiable with an individual person or household.

If a user attempts to extract data for an individual or a household by differencing reports for areas that vary by only a few houses, those data will be estimates that have been purposely modified; they are unlikely to reflect the true situation in those houses.
